Martial Arts Awareness

Martial arts classes are kind of an odd place- if the martial arts is all about learning how to not fight and how to avoid confrontation then why are so many hours spent learning techniques and how to fight?
Wouldn’t we just all be better taking some sort of verbal judo class or conflict resolution seminar?
Paradoxically one has to learn how to fight, and fight well, before one can learn how to not fight, and ultimately avoid a fight.
Many of us don’t live in a war zone or place of civil war, and for those of us who don’t- if you are getting into fights or conflicts after a few years of training, then you are doing something wrong and have lost your martial arts awareness.
In learning how to fight and defend yourself you learn how the human body operates in such a situation. Fights don’t just “happen”, there are many cues and events leading up to it- and training week after week begins to open up these signs and your awareness to what happens way before a fight breaks out.
This awareness goes on to build many levels, tactical layers, and awareness as to what is going on around you. Punches don’t just appear out of nowhere, there are many layers that happen before it is thrown- but by starting at the punch and working your way back over time you start to see this happen- almost seeing into the future, and most people are very transparent about their actions and what they intend to do.
