What Is Kenjutsu Study?

Kenjutsu (ken = sword, jutsu = skill/study) is the method of studying and understanding the Japanese sword (katana) and how it was historically used by the samurai. A complete martial arts in its own standing (but always studied with other arts) kenjutsu covers etiquette and wearing the sword, drawing it from the scabbard to directly cut, returning it properly, postures, cuts, traditional forms, and grappling with it. Training is conducted with wooden replica swords that approximate the length and weight of a real sword, in addition to using bamboo swords for certain practice skills.
The benefits of kenjutsu in the modern world are many and are similar to any intense mind-body connection experience- increased concentration, coordination, and an understanding of what is around you and how it relates to the situation.
