How Long Does It Take To Become A Sensei?
How long does it take to become a sensei (teacher) in the martial arts?
While there are different levels and qualifications
depending on the school, style, and discipline, in the martial arts there is a
pathway to teaching that is followed.
The first step is to put in the years and certifications in
the school, style, or discipline one is looking to learn. In the Japanese
martial arts this will be progressing through the kyu levels (colored rank
belts), to the dan level (black belt) of training.
Generally speaking one has to be at least at a black belt
level in order to be a teacher in the martial art.
At what level this is, again depends on the school/style.
Some school are an assistant instructor at 1st
dan and a full instructor at 3rd dan, etc.
Depending on the school/style/tradition one might also need
a teaching license (menkyo) in addition to a black belt level certification.
Just how long does this take?
In some schools this might be from 3-5 years, while others
at 10-15 years being more realistic.
Beyond the rank and time in training there are also other factors
to consider, such as continued training with a teacher, attending events and
workshops, and networking within the martial arts community that add to the
depth and qualifications of being a teacher in the martial arts.
