Private Lessons Are Not The Best Way To Learn The Martial Arts

Are private lessons the best way to learn the martial arts?

If one is interested in quickly leveling up their ability, why not get targeted one-on-one instruction?

Why wouldn’t this be a less then optimal idea?

Martial arts, as with any physical activity is about moving the body in certain way, in this case a martial way as opposed to sports, dance, hatha yoga or even dancing. Yes, there are spiritual and physical components to the ‘arts, but the primary method is physical- copy the movements, refine the movements, and make the movements one’s own.

Regardless of style, school, or discipline there are fundamental movement laws to be found in the martial arts: distance, timing, rhythm, balance, etc. and being able to control and use these laws of movement is important.

What one sees in a correct class structure is training with other students, interacting with other students in class as a training partner so one can understand, see, and control the different timings and movements. People are people, but we all move a bit different and have different ranges of movements.

Training in a one-on-one private lesson format means you as the student are missing out on learning these real time adjustments in class which are vital to the martial arts.

Which is why we are always switching training partners in class with each new technique, in order to experience these adjustments real time.

Training as a private lesson student only has the possibility of missing out on this vital part of the martial arts.
