Hanbo Goshinjutsu
Two of the first weapon based lessons we begin exploring in the dojo when you join is the use of the knife and the use of the 3-foot stick light stick (hanbo). We begin with knife as that is a common modern object in our society and it is important that you learn what it is capable of, as most have no idea of what it can really do, and in this way you are martially aware of it, an awareness of what it can do so you can avoid it at all costs.
Hanbo is also taught as goshinjutsu (practical self-defense)
as it can be found everywhere and is a good counter to many situations.
The first two to three years of martial arts are the
toughest years to train as one is literally reprograming a lifetime of incorrect
body movement that one has picked up just going through life. That first year
or two of martial training in a way makes you weaker as one us undoing and
redoing at the same time, and as a result the hanbo is a good training tool to
learn.
