Often practiced with our martial arts stretching of junan taiso there are a set of *dragon* breathing exercises which increase lung capacity and help remove tension. Practiced over time, the aim is to help move in a relaxed manner.
Martial arts techniques (waza) of course depend on distance, timing, and rhythm on but also on nagare- the flow of moving smoothly and in a relaxed manner without tension.
Tension slows movement down, and creates breaks in the movement which makes achieving timing and balance harder.
One of the ways also explore removing tension in movement can be found here.
Making junan taiso and breathing part of one’s regular martial arts daily routine, along with exercises as a kind of pre-training.
See you on the mat!
