Here we practice leaping up and kicking our training partner with both feet to the stomach, chest, or face. A number of pieces need to be in place to do this correctly.
The first is tobi- your ability to leap up into the air, or away as practiced in shi ho ten chi tobi ten ryaku no maki. At the kyu level six feet was acceptable, now at the dan level nine feet is acceptable. Your ukemi also needs to be developed so you can kick and land correctly, followed by immediately rolling back and getting up.
If you are having problems with the ukemi then a way to learn it for this particular waza is to already start elevated. Stand on a bench or step, jump off for the kick and then land. A lesser trajectory other than straight up makes landing a bit easier. Use this as a transition to learning and not as a long term crutch.
