What is the training like at our martial arts study group?
An excellent question that I will try to answer, but which is difficult as we are expressing dynamic ideas, movement, and understandings put down in a static form here by trying to capture and explain them. The focus of our group is to practice and study the martial arts lessons of Dr. Massaki Hatsumi and to come together as martial friends in such a study. As such there is no beginner or advanced class as we all practice the various lessons and transmissions according to our own skill level and ability to understand in the moment. This type of training, while perhaps confusing, and a bit chaotic at times is important as there are no limitations placed on the student at any time, allowing them to grow at their own pace.
In this transmission the focus of our classes are taken from a training document known as the tenchijin ryaku no maki (the book of heaven, earth, and man) which covers a variety of topics such as how to move the body, basic ways of standing, striking, blocking, along with locks, throws, and a collection of formal techniques (kata) that provide a firm foundation in the Bujinkan martial arts system.
A few of these exercises are solo in nature, but most involve interacting with a training partner which is very important to understanding the movement- one has to not only learn how they move, but also how various techniques change the movement of their training partner.
